Review: VC99 Nikto (Skiff Guard)

By Mike — Friday, June 1, 2012

It's based on the character the original 1984 Kenner action figure was referenced from and this Vintage Collection version has chock full of sculpt and paint detail that has surpassed all expectations, plus he's got 14 points of articulation to boot.

SCULPT/PAINT: Hasbro's design team have really outdone themselves with this figure right down to the paint details on the eyes. And while the film character was just a guy in a mask and costume that may not pass scrutiny up close, the sculpting details applied on this Nikto, from his proportionality to the fold and wrinkly details on his costume, give him a realistic dimension. If we needed to be picky, some additional desert dirt and weathering would have been a nice touch

He includes a removable headpieces as well as a functional holster. Truth be told, the character was just a passing glimpse in the film and would probably have been forgettable. But the Kenner figure cemented his place in the group of Skiff Guards that are demanding to be updated for the modern line, and with this fantastic release, you can enthusiastically check him off your list.

CARDBACK: The card back photo is vintage and nostalgia all the way, using the same reference photo as the Kenner release as well as the green blister background and name bullet. The 2012 "14 back" vintage style graces the flip side with characters from the rest of Wave 5 as well as previous waves.

TOPPING THINGS OFF: Hasbro has released the definitive version of this character and adds another checked box to that Collect All 92 list. His sculpt and paint detail is exceptional and true to both the character and Kenner vintage action figure. Having this figure in his original Kenner cardback highlights the win factor even more. With Hasbro soon to be updating and releasing Weequay, the troika of original Kenner Skiff Guards is complete.
