This one is a bit more of a nail-biter than usual. I know you know, but in case someone didn't, Hasbro's Star Wars The Vintage Collection LAAT/i Gunship is a crowdfund project that ends in about a week. The $449.99 ship currently has 4,122 units old of a floor of 8,000. Will it make it? Well, it's hard to say. Previous projects generally weren't this close to the wire near the end, but Hasbro's most recent project prior to this one absolutely skyrocketed past all the stretch goals in the final day. You can probably throw precedent out the window after that, particularly after the Cantina seems off to a rousing start on eBay.
Instagram's own SWTVC showed off two cardbacks to pipeline reveal Padme and Shaak Ti, plus two sticker sheet upgrades. The stickers will no doubt help fans who already bought two or three gunships consider buying another two or three. Plo's Bros is a pretty nifty upgrade pack, but obviously fans could also run their own stickers for existing ships. The two new pipeline reveals seem to confirm what I was worried about - that Return to Geonosis would be incredibly spare when it comes to new figures, much like Return to Tatooine wound up being. This is a topic for another day, but it's taking some adjusting to see Star Wars as this weird little toy line that just can't stop finding new hats, helmets, accessories, and background talent to make as a toy to what it's been lately - an impressive upgrade cycle.
The big question over the next week for you - and for me - is if peer pressure, FOMO, and the possibility of it hitting 8,000 will make us reach for our wallets. It's the fifth giant The Vintage Collection item, and it's the eighth Republic Gunship. I'd probably recommend it to anyone who has zero Gunships, but if this fails to crowdfund I'd also nudge you to eBay for the old ones at $200-$300. I've got them all, and they're very nice big sturdy toys that were an incredible value. This new one is also very good and undoubtedly will be the last 3 3/4-inch collector mold of this toy I expect to see in my lifetime, but I also wouldn't mind seeing what a new kid one might look like. The $30 X-Wing is really something - what could $60-$70 get us for kids? But I digress.
This Gunship had a great weekend, as it wasn't even halfway funded last week.
