According to Box Office Mojo, the newest Star Wars movie made about $100,000,000 this past weekend. That's a lot of money for me, but not a ton for a major movie over Memorial Day weekend. At 4,300 theaters, a lot of fans have reported a lot of empty seats. (I can confirm this for my screening.) That's good news if you hate crowds, but probably not the best news if you're hoping for more big long weird creature features.
With its international box office take, it will probably do just fine. Marketing seems much more subdued, and merchandising tie-ins seem to be a lot more generalized so as to not target any sort of collector this time around. The movie was good, the toys are fine, but the portion sizes are still pretty miserable. If you haven't seen the movie, see if your local theaters are running any discounted Tuesday screenings.
