Gentle Giant Sends In The Clones

(NEW YORK, NY, February 16, 2003) Gentle Giant Studios is a company that doesn’t rest on their laurels. Coming off a successful 2002 with their real-scanned Star Wars mini-bust assortment, the group from Burbank, CA launches ’03 by sending in the clones with Clone Trooper mini busts featuring 3 color variants and interchangeable arms. Also to be released next month is the alpha clone himself, Boba Fett, featuring a killer pose and highly detailed stylings right down to the "real" braids.

The new Clone Trooper mini busts, debuting later this year, feature white, red, and yellow color ranking variants. The red variant will be the version shipped sparsely, with the ratio being 6 per case and breaking down to 3 white, 2 yellow, and one red (only 6,000 pieces total). Also featured for the first time are interchangeable arms with multiple poses brandishing different accessories, such as a heavy blaster or a pair of binoculars. Changing the limbs is a cinch, with a metal peg attaching the head and arms to the torso . Since the Clone Troopers in the film are digitalized, Gentle Giant had to go about modeling one in a different way. “We scanned the original maquette that was used and also the digital data from the big army scenes,” notes Dev Gilmore, VP of Product and Design, “ because of the paint variations and for the collector who was buying one or more, we wanted to make sure that they weren’t getting another bust that was just painted differently. So by offering the interchangeable arms with different accessories, you can change them up a little and tell a different story on your wall.”

Future plans include a bust of Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin. Since the actor is deceased, Gentle Giant scanned a “life mask” they were able to obtain and use it as the model. Also in the works are a Gamorrean Guard, Biker Scout, Royal Guard, Stormtrooper, TIE Pilot, and towards the end of the year, Chewbacca. These are based on actual Lucasfilm archival materials, including  props and costumes. Gentle Giant will be visiting The Ranch in March of this year to scan as much of the archives as they are allowed to. They’ll be scanning not only costumes, but weapons, props, and ships as well (hint, hint). Gilmore also shared that they are “very interested” in doing a Darth Maul bust from Episode I.
