Galactic Hunter.com's Star Wars Q&A with Adam Pawlus
July 20, 2009

1. How is it Hasbro can use the same tooling for multiple figures that come out in the same timeframe sometimes but other times they say the tooling is currently being used elsewhere? For example, in 2008, the Saga Legends C-3PO, Droid Factory R-3PO, and Hoth Battle Pack K-3PO were all released close to each other and used the same mold.

What I think we see here is a failure for everyone to understand one another. Hasbro has multiple factories, so when they say "the tooling is being used elsewhere" they mean that quite literally. It could be in another region in China, for example, so it's like saying "well, we make Battle Packs in Orlando, but the mold for this one Luke is currently being used in Texas." In some cases they do have multiple tools for certain things-- or so I've been told in the past-- particularly if a certain figure needs more production. (Darth Vader was one such item.) It's possible that some particular tools get moved around, and that some factories just make specific things for whatever reason. Perhaps tax purposes.

Remember, some molds are used in numerous SKUs all at once. You could find the Revenge of the Sith super-articulated Clone Trooper mold in Battle Packs, Saga Legends, Basic Figures (TAC/TSC/etc.), Order 66 sets, and so on and so forth all at once. It's doable, but if the right gun is in the wrong location, there might be problems at times. Toy companies often use multiple facilities in China depending on a variety of factors, not the least of which is the best costs and being able to meet the right manufacturing and toy safety regulations. As I am not a Hasbro employee, you should take all of this with a grain of salt-- but piecing together anecdotes and other inquiries I've made in the past, this is pretty much how it looks.

2. I've seen that Hasbro is supposedly releasing figures of Jacen and Jaina Solo, any rumors of an Anakin Solo figure?
--Chris

Rumors? Oh sure. I can get you all the rumors you want. Hasbro has basically said "we're not planning on it in the near term" multiple times and I tend to believe them. Anakin Solo, compared to Jaina and Jacen, is a little more obscure so I wouldn't expect to see him unless it were in a pack with those other figures. In the grand scheme of things, he's definitely a lesser character so odds are it's going to be a bit of a wait unless there's an excuse to put him in a comic pack. Which, after all, might be possible due to the recent Invasion series.

And regarding Jaina and Jacen, at press time, Hasbro has not officially announced when or how they will be made-- but there are definitely rumblings that this is/was likely to happen soon. (Remember, things are often happening inside Hasbro and as time moves on, items get delayed or cancelled. The upcoming Vong figure being a key example, as he was originally scheduled a couple of years back, plus I can pull out numerous others but I'm trying to keep my ranting short.)

3. Do you know if Hasbro is going to release the Luke and Mara Jade comic pack? I haven't been able to find mine since my house got trashed during Hurricane Ike back in September. Either I lost it then, or I packed it so far away I haven't come across it yet. (I'm hoping fot the latter.)
--JM

There are no concrete plans to rerelease a repackaged Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade comic pack (the 2007 release) at this time. However! You do have options, and hope.

First, the option: eBay. Thanks to the glut of toys in recent years, most Hasbro Star Wars products actually lose value as they become older. There are exceptions, but the going rate of this set on eBay is about $7-$8 plus shipping. A rerelease of this set would set you back $13+ at Target, Toys "R" Us, or Wal-Mart. With that in mind, unless you have a financial situation (like being sans credit card) that prevents your buying online, eBay may be the best possible way to get this one again at the best possible price.

Your hope comes in the form of Hasbro's trying to save on tooling, plus their behavior with how they do comic pack assortments. Unlike basic figures, Hasbro is notorious for recycling, repackaging, and reissuing comic packs.

4. In the latest wave of Legacy figures (Wave 7.5? or is it wave 8?), what version of the Biker Scout will we find? Is this the flip-up visor version? Or will we see a removable helmet? Any new features with our favorite trooper?
--Trina

Nope!

The Wave 8 release-- red package, for those keeping track-- is actually a bit of a mystery so far. Judging by the photos it's going to be either the original "Vintage" one or the flip-up, but Hasbro's recent releases would make me bank heavily on it being the original, non-flip-up release. It should be a straight repack with minimal-- as in, no intentional-- changes. There could be a different dirt paint op, or any dirt or grime might be dropped, but don't expect any changes of significance.

5. I recently saw the new TCW Anakin & Can-Cell Battle Pack and was wondering whether Anakin is a repack of the B'Omarr Monastery [Battle Pack] version. The cloth-goods waist cloaks seem to be the giveaway, but I'm not sure.
--Edward

While there may be tiny insignificant and unintentional paint differences, they are, for all intents and purposes, the same figure.

FIN

Comic-Con is this week, and due to the combined power of so many things being leaked and Hasbro not announcing jack, it's expected to be a semi-eventful affair. Surely there will be some 2010 sneak peeks, but it appears we're going to see a lot of exclusive Clone Troopers and hopefully that Return of the Jedi wave of Legacy figures we were first previewed back in, geez what was it, February in the Star Wars Insider? I just want to see Klaatu/Wooof. Beyond that, I dunno if I can expect much other than a better look at the recently leaked Dewback or maybe the new TIE Fighter. We'll see, I guess.

In other news, I have realized I never got that minty green Cobra Ninja Viper. A pity. Well, something to hunt on the show floor.

Got questions? I bet you do. Email me with "Q&A" somewhere in the subject line and hopefully I'll get to yours in the next column!
