Vehicles & Playsets
While the Clone Wars will bring us several new vehicles, there are no
playsets on tap for the year. Not surprisingly, all of the vehicles tie in to
the
Clone Wars.
First and foremost is a new midsize vehicle assortment, something we really
haven’t seen in a while. This $20 range of vehicles includes the following.
Anakin Skywalker’s Jedi Starfighter
This vehicle is essentially the offspring of the Jedi Starfighter, Pod Racer,
and X-Wing. As a toy, there is much to like, but it does come off as a little
clunky, which is the point. It features something resembling opening S-Foils,
landing gear, a firing missile, and deco that should bring to mind Anakin’s
racing heritage. The red design on the side, according to Hasbro, is the Star
Wars equivalent of the letter “A.”
Geonosian Fighter
Includes an exclusive Pilot figure which the assure us will be removable. Firing
missiles.
Hailfire Droid
Giant wheels and tons of firing missiles are present on this vehicle, which was
previously developed as a Saga toy. It should appear in the Clone Wars
assortment later this year.
Jedi Starfighter (Repaint)
Shown in an AOTC deleted scene and now born in plastic is this new
old vehicle. The Droid resembles R2-B1 and as far as other changes, there did
not appear to be any although I did not try and find out if the area to plug in
the small radar dish from the Obi-Wan Pilot was left in.
Trade Federation Tank
This marks the triumphant return of this spectacular Episode One product that,
for most fans, proved elusive. New deco should appeal to newcomers, and it’s
just different enough to warrant a purchase from those that have the first one.
Overall, it looks lovely and it’s great to see them bringing back this
wonderful toy.
A small vehicle assortment is continuing but was not shown. Expected are the
likes of Durge on a bike as well as a Clone Commando.
The Gunship is, in fact, $10 cheaper than its predecessor. Dubbed the Commando
Gunship, it sports a lot of details like markings for its “kills”
on the side and a few new paint splotches here and there. It is fundamentally
the same ship, and there is no “additional firepower” like previously
rumored. At this time it will be without gun pods as Hasbro does not seem to
plan on selling any figures with the accessory in 2003.
Additional vehicles and playsets are in the works, but were not discussed at
this time.
