Basic

The Basic Star Wars range this year shows that Hasbro isn’t about to abandon that which made it great—which is, of course, film figures. Many figures we’ve seen before were shown, new pieces were revealed for the first time, and more importantly, we got the skinny on some things that weren’t shown.

The film figures revealed much of what we saw earlier as well as quite a bit that we hadn’t yet seen. So, without further delay, here’s the play-by-play of Saga, followed by The Clone Wars.

Figures previously seen or released will not necessarily be covered in this section.

SAGA

Achk Med-Beq
Ahmed Best as a nightclubber. Comes with accessories very similar to Lt. Faytonni, and it does not look as if their bases will connect. An excellent sculpt for an obscure character, this is a well-made figure even if it will most likely appeal to a limited few.

Coleman Trebor
The dinosaur-like warrior sports a wide array of articulation and seems to have quite a imposing physical presence.

Lt. Danni Faytonni
Anthony Daniels as a nightclubber. Comes with a blaster, a table, and he sports a very nice sculpt. Sure to be a hit with customizers making a “behind the scenes” C-3PO.

Darth Vader (Return of the Jedi)
The new Darth Vader figure is more or less what was shown previously. The articulation in the arm will inflict a little bit of tennis elbow to the Sith Lord, but the product on display showed a strong sculpt which looks like yet another winner in 2003.

Emperor Palpatine
This little surprise sported a can, Force-lightning, ball jointed shoulders, and a sculpt sure to make fans swoon after the despot’s long absence from toy store shelves. While he does not sport the ability to sit, this is guaranteed to brighten anyone’s Imperial Shuttle dioramas.

Han Solo (Hoth)
Although only shown in one color, he will come in both blue and brown flavors to be purchased at a fan’s discretion. His version of Luke’s (or Anakin’s) Lightsaber is metal and he does have a removable blaster in his holster.

Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight)
With a body that had a lot that was hard to see, this figure is sure to cause fans to scratch their heads. What appeared to be elbow joints were clearly obscured—if that’s possible—on the figure which should give him a fair range of motion. The head sculpt itself had fairly messy hair and visible white painted teeth, giving him both an angry visage and a look that’s not entirely dissimilar to Mattel’s He-Man revival. Overall, though, it should please fans.

Padme Amidala (Secret Ceremony)
Not much to speak of that can’t be derived from the photos.

Snowtrooper
Including a ball-style firing red missile in his cannon, this figure looks to have been somewhat improved by either the Hasbro team or from different
lighting. The picture more or less speaks for itself.

WA-7 (Dexter’s Robotic Waitress)
While it was difficult to determine any articulation, the figure’s base is excellent and the sculpt is impeccable. The end result is an excellent figure that’s sure to make it to every fan’s wish list.

Wat Tambor
The separatist leader of the Techno Union comes with a spiffy base that has a holographic vehicle cast in yellow.

CLONE WARS

Anakin Skywalker
Previewed the day before the event, Anakin comes with a whole galaxy of accessories. His leg armor is not removable, but he does have a removable bandolier, headband, gauntlets, and other accessories. His expression was most unusual, showing a feeling of what seems like it could be disgust.

ARC Trooper
Shown for the first time, he sports a “skirt” similar to that of a Snowtrooper and a pauldron like that of a Sandtrooper. The superior version of the Clone Trooper is sure to be a hit with fans of all ages upon its release a few months down the road.

Durge (Bounty Hunter)
Hasbro made it a point to say this was an official LucasFilm design which they translated to plastic, not one of their own. While it seems to have polarized fan reactions, he does come with a lot of parts and this is the first of two versions of this figure to see release in 2003.

Obi-Wan Kenobi
Sports a bunch of removable gear but otherwise looks like a new version of the film figure. He doesn’t seem to be articulated to any great length but the overall spirit of the character seems to be left intact.

Yoda (Clone Wars General)
New and notable is the fact that his vest/bandolier is removable.
