Mega-publisher Electronic Arts is experiencing massive layoffs this week. According to the Beeb, there was a Star Wars game cancelled as EA cuts 670 jobs. That's a lot of jobs. Recent games have received a fair amount of praise as of late, but canceled Star Wars projects are everywhere lately. They write:

"The game, which was in early development, would have been a first-person shooter set in the Star Wars universe."

Video games have exploded in popularity over the past few decades, with budgets moving from a couple of guys making low-resolution training remotes you control with a paddle to multi-million dollar affairs with hundreds of contributors, graphics rivaling the special effects of movies, and hours of cut scenes that also are on par with a movie or streaming show. Yet, there is a lot of development in lower-end games with simpler premises and different goals - could we see a return to that some day? Probably not. But this certainly gives you pause when one of the biggest growth sectors in entertainment starts to hit a few hurdles (and even more mergers.)
