The
saga of the Pit Droids is a strange and twisted tale. Carded
Two-Pack? Cinema Scene? Bonus Pack-In? They’ve done it
all. The worst part is if you don’t have ALL of these
little buggers in your collection, you’re just not complete.
(We’re going to take a brief pause now to allow incomplete
completists time to gouge their eyes out, scream, and take a
few hostages.)
OK,
we’re back! First up for today is a glimpse at the original
Hasbro shot of the Pit Droids two-pack (basic carded figures,
Episode I line). Notice that our hyperactive helpers
sport an additional component to the tool accessory pack-in
(and a hose to connect them). What became of it? Odds are pretty
good that it didn’t make the final cut due to economic
cutbacks, much like the oval-shaped CommTech chip. (Memo to
Hasbro: If you decide to make a Pit Droids troop builder set,
please consider adding this completed accessory.)

Remember
this shot (above)? The Belgian
Star Wars Fan Club,
TeeKay421, nabbed some early shots of upcoming Hasbro product
back in 1999. At the time these figures were being called a
Cinema Scene, but that line was killed off before they had a
chance to make it. (They’d make an awfully skimpy Cinema
Scene anyway.)
These
figures, along with another threesome sporting a different pose
and accessory, were instead used as Bonus Pack-Ins in lieu of
a CommTech Chip for Europe where some people don’t speak
English. (Although most of these sets wound up in the hands of
English scalpers. Parts of England do still speak English, which
can be quite confusing.) A complete set of these six Bonus Pit
Droids will cost collectors roughly $150 as of this writing. (The
three that are packed with the Naboo Soldier and Holographic Darth
Sidious are the rarer of the two poses.) Unfortunately, we are
forced to recommend checking the usual auction sites for these
pieces, as most e-tailers do not seem to stock them.

Very
few collectors (out of the teeming masses who prowl Toys’R’Us
every day) have added these imports to their collections. With
these figures being some of the most difficult to obtain figures
from the Episode I line, they’re a unique addition
to any collection. We’ve included a few high-resolution
shots of these sets since we’re not aware of any site that
has offered such images of them in their natural (i.e. LOOSE)
state. We will add a full series of shots to our Image Bank in
the very near future.
