Figure of the Day

Star Wars Figure of the Day: Day 1,971

By Adam Pawlus — Wednesday, January 2, 2013

While not a huge hit in 2010, this Owen Lars figure from a Darth Maul-bedecked comic pack is now hot stuff.  Did you skip it?  You poor fool.  Once a mere $15, this set will now set you back several times that. Is it worth the asking price?

Star Wars Figure of the Day: Day 1,970

Easily the most infuriating moment in Star Wars action figure collecting in 2012 was the announcement that this green R4 Series Astromech Droid and a couple dozen more just like him would be exclusive to a theme park.   These dubiously necessary collectibles required a significant expense to obtain, be it time, money, or a mix.

While Hasbro put out a bunch of action figures in 2012, we look at their simplest one in our final Figure of the Day for the year.  This Battle Droid has but 2 points of articulation, yet stands fairly well and looks pretty good.  Not bad as a figure designed as filler for an MTT's droid rack!  If you haven't got one already, should you?

This Obi-Wan Kenobi is a realistic take on the 2008 incarnation of his Clone Wars armor.  It's (at least) the third non-animated 3 3/4-inch figure to do some take on this outfit, and I think it's my favorite.  Is it worth ordering this de facto online exclusive?

This Expanded Universe Tri-Droid came from a hard-to-find Battle Pack which is actually quite good.  The unique take on the droid has a blood red Separatist symbol plus a lot of black, meaning it's like a goth robot or something.  It deprograms itself so it feels something.  Is it worth getting?

It's Snaggletooth, sort of!  From Target's still-available Vintage 3-Packs, this is an update of the creature from the first movie, but it doesn't look a lot like the original Kenner action figure.  It's really cool though.

As one of the last Christmas figures, this Holiday Jawa works as a non-Christmas figure too.  He's holding a 3 3/4-inch scale Training Remote, an accessory which to this day still hasn't really been done for full-height action figures.  Beyond the retooled arms and unique eyes, it's like the wonderful 1996 Jawa action figure.  Did you get one?

Hey kids, it's Santa Yoda!  One of four "Holiday Edition" sets (and one of only two that ended up at the intended retailer), Yoda managed to give fans a new sculpt with some swell accessories, all based on a vintage Ralph McQuarrie painting.  It even came with a Christmas Card!  It's a heck of an ice figure for 2003, despite the then-high price of about $12.95.

It's a blue R9-Series Astromech Droid! It's at Star Tours in Orlando, so if you want one, it'll cost you.  I think it's worth it.  The figure, I mean.  The trip?  Who knows.  I don't know where you live.  Maybe it'll be worth escaping the terrors that is the holiday season.

This Pit Droid came out earlier in the year and was sold in a few configurations.  It's the same figure, though.  Did you get one?  You probably should.

This R2-D2 is pretty amazing.  Downsized and packed with features, it's actually worth the ten bucks.  Those glasses?  Removable.  The lightsaber pops up, a sensorscope is included, this is really the best R2-D2 you can buy.  Except it's shorter than every other Astromech you own.

Star Wars Figure of the Day: Day 1,960

Possibly appearing in an underpriced 8-pack at a Walmart near you,  this late-arriving Obi-Wan Kenobi is actually pretty good.  I hate that the battery is sealed inside, but the design other than that isn't half bad.  He's bulkier to fit the electronics, but the removable "skirt" lets him sit and the detail is quite good.  Should you get one?

Star Wars Figure of the Day: Day 1,959

It's the Shock Trooper, 2012 style!  The sculpt is thinner, the deco is crisp, but it lacks some of the damage from before.  I like it. And thankfully, you can probably find it out.  Want to know more?

The Blue R4-Series Astromech Droid is like R2-D2 with a pointier head.  Well, part of it anyway. Big thanks to our pal Shannon for his assistance in making sure this guy got here where he belongs.  Was it worth it?

This Luke Skywalker in his Bespin outfit is one of my favorite figures of the year.  Also, all time.  It's wonderful.  Crisp lines in his outfit are remarkable.  A working holster is awesome.  Yellow hair is oh-so-retro.  He can stand, sit, and requires little futzing to get him to behave as a good toy should.  Hasbro, you've done well in my book!
